For many visitors, the museum also offers a moment for spiritual reflection. Saint Daniel Comboni is seen as a model of faith and sacrifice and the museum’s layout provides space to reflect on the value of missionary service and solidarity with the most vulnerable.
Daniel Comboni (1831–1881) was an Italian Catholic missionary and bishop renowned for his efforts to spread Christianity in Africa and for founding the Institute of the Comboni Missionaries. Born into a farming family in Limone sul Garda, Comboni felt an early religious and missionary calling. After being ordained as a priest, he began his ministry in Africa, focusing on what is now Sudan.
Understanding the enormous challenges European missionaries faced in Africa, including disease and harsh environmental conditions, Comboni developed a strategy he called “Saving Africa with Africa.” This approach was based on the idea of training African priests, religious figures and laypeople who could help spread the faith and foster social development within their own communities.
In 1867, he founded the Institute of the Comboni Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus, a religious order dedicated to missions in Africa. His vision included not only evangelization but also education and the promotion of human rights, seeking to combat slavery and improve living conditions for African populations. Comboni was appointed Bishop of Khartoum in 1877 and, despite the challenges, worked tirelessly for his mission until his death on October 10, 1881. His legacy and spirit of sacrifice had a lasting impact on Catholic missions in Africa. Daniel Comboni was beatified in 1996 and canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2003, becoming a saint of the Catholic Church.
The multimedia museum is open from May to October, daily from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM and from 3:00 PM to 6:30 PM. From November to April, visits can be arranged by contacting the reception or calling +39 0365 954091.
