Local specialties include polenta (plain or enriched with cheese, known as polenta taragna), aged or soft cheeses, wild game and desserts such as leavened cakes. Other favorites are casoncelli (stuffed pasta), tagliatelle with mushrooms and various stews. All dishes are prepared with fresh, locally sourced ingredients, making them a true delight, especially after a day spent in the open air.

The experience becomes even more memorable when dining at a rifugio or malga: many of these establishments are easily accessible by car, short hikes, or ski lifts operating in winter.

Rifugio Petitpierre (Ponte di Legno)

Located near the ski resort of Ponte di Legno, Rifugio Petitpierre is easily reachable by car or via a short walk from the Passo del Tonale cable car station. It’s also accessible directly from the slopes in winter. This mountain hut is renowned for its traditional Valle Camonica cuisine, offering spectacular views of the surrounding peaks. Rifugio Valmalza (Vione)

Just a few kilometers from Ponte di Legno, Rifugio Valmalza is nestled in a serene natural setting and accessible only by a short walk (no motor vehicles allowed). Rifugio alla Cascata (Vezza d’Oglio)

Located along a gentle path following the Oglio River, just above the village of Vezza d’Oglio, this hut is also accessible by car. From here, several trails begin. Known for its homemade and hearty cuisine, it serves simple yet flavorful dishes such as charcuterie boards, local cheeses and warm traditional meals. It’s a perfect stop for family outings or group trips.

Rifugio Capanna Valbione (Ponte di Legno)

Perched just above Ponte di Legno, Rifugio Capanna Valbione can be reached by chairlift or via a panoramic walk of about three kilometers. This hut is famous for its mountain specialties, welcoming atmosphere and a panoramic terrace offering breathtaking views of the valley and surrounding peaks. Nestled in a basin encircled by the Corno d’Aola and Salimmo peaks, the hut overlooks a charming alpine lake.

In addition to a restaurant, there’s a pizzeria and during summer, the hut offers a bar and snack services.

Rifugio Tonolini (Valle di Miller)

Accessible via a short hike from Malga Premassone, Rifugio Tonolini is an excellent choice for those wishing to savor local dishes such as pizzoccheri, polenta and grilled meats. The hut is surrounded by stunning natural scenery, including alpine lakes and towering peaks, making it a must-visit for nature lovers.

Malga Stain (Borno)

Easily reachable via a 45-minute walk from the Preda locality near Edolo, Malga Stain is a traditional dairy offering authentic flavors of Valle Camonica. Highlights of the menu include polenta taragna, casoncelli and homemade desserts. The breathtaking views of the valley’s mountains add to the charm of this rustic dining experience.

Rifugio Bozzi (Val di Montozzo)

Accessible via a hike from the Case di Viso locality (where parking is available), Rifugio Bozzi is a must-visit in the area. Its kitchen focuses on local products, offering dishes like pizzoccheri, polenta and stews. Situated in a historically rich area, the hut is close to WWI trenches, making it an ideal destination for a day combining nature and history.
