The Garda from Above
Paragliding and hang gliding are among the most thrilling and adventurous sports you can experience on the western shore of Lake Garda, particularly in the Montecastello area. This spot, surrounded by lush greenery and overlooking one of Italy’s most beautiful lakes, offers ideal conditions for free-flying experiences.
Here, favorable winds, breathtaking views and perfect takeoff slopes combine to make Montecastello a reference point for paragliding and hang-gliding enthusiasts, whether beginners or seasoned professionals.
Montecastello sits about 700 meters above sea level, in the Tignale area on Lake Garda’s western shore. Its elevated position offers a spectacular view of the entire lake, stretching out to the surrounding mountains and even the Prealps on clear days. This enchanting setting attracts not only tourists seeking relaxation and natural beauty but also those passionate about free flying.
The area’s atmospheric conditions are ideal for paragliding and hang gliding, thanks to the presence of thermal updrafts that facilitate flight. The lake’s proximity creates a unique microclimate with constant, steady winds that allow for long and stable flights. This is why Montecastello is one of the most beloved spots for pilots of all skill levels.
Paragliding is one of the most accessible sports for those looking to experience the thrill of free flying. Unlike hang gliding, which involves a rigid frame and requires more technical preparation, paragliding relies on a flexible, lightweight wing that lets pilots soar gently through the air. Takeoff is as simple as running along a hill or mountain until the wind lifts you off the ground.
At Montecastello, takeoffs occur on gentle, well-equipped slopes, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience. Once airborne, paragliders can enjoy a spectacular view of Lake Garda, with its azure waters and surrounding mountains. Paragliding offers a peaceful and relaxing experience, perfect for those who want to immerse themselves in nature at a leisurely pace, savoring every moment.
For first-timers, many flight schools offer tandem flights with qualified instructors. This allows participants to safely enjoy the thrill of flight under the guidance of professionals who handle all aspects, from takeoff to landing.
Compared to paragliding, hang gliding offers a more dynamic and adrenaline-pumping flight experience. This type of flying requires greater technical preparation, as pilots must control a rigid, wing-shaped structure that allows for higher speeds and more complex maneuvers. The sensation of hang gliding is more direct, with the ability to glide quickly and execute sharp turns.
Montecastello provides ideal conditions for hang gliders as well, thanks to the thermal updrafts that allow pilots to quickly gain altitude and stay airborne for extended periods. Experienced pilots can enjoy long, technical flights, using the thermal currents to ascend higher and travel greater distances. Many also venture toward Salò and Monte Pizzoccolo, popular departure points for hang gliders.
As with paragliding, hang gliding schools offer courses for beginners and tandem flights for those who want to experience the adventure without prior training.
One of the most captivating aspects of free flying from Montecastello is the panoramic view that unfolds below. Flying over Lake Garda offers a unique and unforgettable perspective. From the sky, the lake appears as a vast azure expanse framed by verdant mountains and hills dotted with olive and lemon groves.
The small towns and villages lining the lake, such as Limone sul Garda, Tignale and Gardone Riviera, can be seen in the distance, while the surrounding mountain peaks, including Monte Baldo and the Prealps of Brescia and Trentino, dominate the horizon. The contrast between the serene lake and the majestic mountains makes the flying experience even more enchanting, combining the adrenaline of adventure with the beauty of nature.
For those eager to experience the thrill of paragliding or hang gliding on Lake Garda’s western shore, Montecastello offers numerous opportunities. Several flight schools and specialized clubs operate in the area, offering training courses for beginners, tandem flights and equipment rentals.
It’s recommended to book in advance and check the weather conditions, as free flying heavily depends on wind and climate. Flight schools provide all the necessary equipment and ensure participant safety. It’s also important to wear appropriate clothing, as temperatures can be cool even in summer at higher altitudes.
Montecastello is located in the municipality of Tignale and is easily accessible from both Brescia and Verona. From Brescia, take the SS45bis Gardesana Occidentale to Gargnano, then continue toward Tignale along a scenic road that climbs into the mountains.
From Verona, follow the same route, passing through Riva del Garda and Limone sul Garda. Once in Tignale, Montecastello is easily reached by car.
